Bienvenido, loyal reader as Bruce and Mary discover a new restaurant in the heart of Old Town. Provecho!
La Chia is situated on Calle Cardenas a half block east of Insurgentes. We have walked by this eatery many times since its opening a few months ago, but the lack of beer on the menu has kept us away. But then, as we discovered at Sazon there are places that will let you bring in your own beer. So we checked and they said sure, but we want you to put it in our glasses. That will work. BTW: If you squint you can see Mary sitting at a table.
On our maiden voyage to La Chia we stopped in for happy hour and split this jamon y queso torta, ham and cheese sandwich and it was not only very tasty but actually a little more than we bargained for and only 27P, about $2.10USD. This is but one of many values on the menu, take a look:
On our next happy hour visit we split this humongous Cuban. It was the special of the day at 32P. They feature a different torta each day. The shredded pork was extremely tender and tasty. And, Mary, being the bread maven that she is, is wild about all the bread used here. They pay attention to detail at La Chia, and it shows.
Today we are each having a meal as we have just worked out at our gym, Powerfitness, and we each deserve a meal, doncha think? And this is what I’m talking about!
My Hamburguesa Hawaiana is built with a 1/3 lb. beef patty with ham, cheese and tocino, bacon, and all the fixings. And the FFs are home cut, they make pretty much everything from scratch. Oh yeah, it’s as good as it looks.
And this is Mary’s meal, take it away girl: I am having the Enchiladas with Panela. The sauce is made by Betsy, she proudly announced, and she has good reason to be proud of it. The enchiladas are tender, corn tortillas wrapped around panela cheese and the whole works is bathed in Betsy’s slightly spicy, very flavorful tomato sauce with a hint of pasilla chile. The beans are homemade and awesome, and the beautiful basil leaf on the top was like a cherry on top! Very tasty, Mary will order this one again! Betsy is happy to point out that their food does not come from the freezer, it is fresh and prepared on site. One bite, and you will see what a difference that makes.
This day we have been served by Betsy, Ivan and chef Marco. If Ivan looks familiar it is because he was our favorite server at JB’s. We’re not sure what is happening over there as Ivan has migrated here and he tells us Jaime, the wonderful chef who prepared our meals at JB’s, is gone as well.
Thanks for visiting, gentle reader. Bruce and Mary recommend La Chia highly for the quality of food and service and the value. And you know they recognize value, tacaños that they are. Hasta proximo Domingo!
