Bienvenido, loyal reader! Please join Bruce and Mary as they explore the Old Town hospitality scene once again, provecho!
Last Saturday, on our way back from the beach, we spotted this new restaurant at the corner of Olas Altas and F. Rodriguez (our street) and curious about things we inquired within and of course our first question was… what do beers cost? During happy hour, (3-7) 15P! That’ll work. So here we are, back to check the place out. BTW: Happy hour well drinks are two for 45P, and at this time they are still preparing their wine list, for the time being, house wine is 40P/glass.
With our Pacificos come chips and salsa. The red salsa is a firey roasted tomato salsa with the heat coming from serranos, the green salsa is a tomatillo blend, slightly milder but still very flavorful. The chopped red onions are slightly pickled with bits of habanero thrown in and are delightful. We try them all, no slackers here!
Our first visit is during the workweek when we usually eat pretty light so we split the JB’s Club. I gotta say these are the best potato wedges I have ever had, I’m not kidding, and the club, a combination of ham, avocado, tomato, bacon and red lettuce is very good and quite filling.
We’ve made our choices and here they come…
Ooh, la la! This is my grilled salmon and it is nothing short of perfection. The veggies are spiced and done exactly right, if they’d come out of the steamer 30 seconds earlier they’d have been too crispy. The rice is infused with butter and is absolutely dreamy and the salmon itself is bravely grilled as it is very tender and flaky because it is exactly, to the second, done.
Mary, cheap date that she is, has Sopa de Tortilla and here is what she has to say about it: Being a fan of Sopa de Tortilla, I have sampled many. This is truly at the top of my list now. Wow! With a slow heat building, this tomato based soup has a complex mix of flavors and spices that work together beautifully. Bits of avocado, ancho pepper, and tortilla chips, and the swirl of cream on top, make each spoonful a delight. This will be a regular order of mine in our future visits! Jaime, the chef, was proud to say it is his own recipe, and to that I say Bien Hecho, Jaime!
There are some perks to blogging. When we mentioned that we’d be doing a post on this place, presto, this cheesecake magically appeared on our table. Oh yeah, it tastes as good as it looks!
Los guapos Enrique and Ivan have been our wonderful meseros, servers. But there is one problem, neither of them will do as asked, kiss the chef for Mary, so…
Thanks for visiting, gentle reader. Bruce and Mary have blogged a number of restaurants in Old Town, but this post is particularly fun as they feel that they did discover JB’s, for it opened its doors just three weeks ago. When you stop in, be sure to tell them that Bruce and Mary sent you, who knows, maybe they’ll get comped again. Hasta proximo Domingo!
