Figueroa’s Burritos

Bienvenido, loyal reader. Please join Bruce and Mary as they check out another Old Town eatery. Buen Provecho!

Figueroa’s Burritos Estilo California, situated at the corner of Calles Caranza and Constitucion, is only a couple blocks from our home so we had walked by it many times before we stopped in, finally, for one of their famed Burritos and now we have become regular customers, treating ourselves to their wonderful breakfasts, most Saturday mornings.

Mary is sitting at our usual table.

The dining area is very colorful, a treat for the eyes.

This is the view of the kitchen from our table.

Dias de los Muertos is approaching, this is Figueroa’s shrine.

Figueroa’s famous Breakfast Burrito.

And here are their wonderful salsas, all made in house: Cola de Rato in oil, Salsa de Habanero and Chipotle. Every time we stop in I rotate through these salsas trying to pick a favorite and I never can, I love them all!

I guess I have to say “sorry” to Fredy’s and all the other breakfast joints in Old Town because this has got to be the best Omelet here. It is the best that I have ever had, anywhere. This particular Omelet is stuffed with Bacon, Mushrooms, and the most excellent Chorizo, and of course, lots of cheese. The cost? 40P.

Figueroa’s menu.

Figueroa’s proud owners, Californians Luis and Kai.

Kai is explaining their very successful business model. From the first they have made it their priority to attract the local trade (they are both fluent en Espanol). And of course the way you do that is with value pricing (pretty obvious from the menu, eh?). Kai tells us tales of gringo owned fancy places with fancy prices springing up, hoping to lure the tourist trade in, and then closing just as quickly. I do have to ask about beer and I guess  here is where I have to come clean, the reason it took us so long to stop in is… they don’t have beer, and you know, beer isn’t just for breakfast. Kai tells me they are working on it but it is quite expensive and a lot of politics are involved.

As Kai and Luis are very involved in the community, they asked that we help get the word out on this local charitable event. This poster is from Figueroa’s FB page.

Well, gotta run, we’re going to grab breakfast at Figueroa’s, naturally, make a beer run, and then to Centro for some more exploring. Cheers!

Thanks for visiting, gentle reader.  Again, Bruce and Mary would like to emphasize that they are by no means PV experts, they know that some readers have been coming down here for more than 20 yrs and they do very much appreciate their commentary… all commentary for that matter. Nothing pleases a blogger more than comentarios! Hasta proximo Domingo!

About escapetomex

My wife Mary and I escaped to Mexico on February 15, 2008 with no plan other than to buy one way tickets to Merida, Mexico and see how long we could stick. We were too young (still too young) to retire and we didn't have any money (still don't) but we'd had it with corporate life and Minnesota winters so we took the fling and with much serendipity it has worked out fine. This blog is the continuing story of our adventure. I hope you enjoy it and please feel to contact me with any questions or insights.

Love reading your blog. Why did you pick WordPress as your site? I am in the process of moving to Mexico and want to share it. How many followers do you have? Do you earn money through your site? Have you looked into doing that? Our ETA is summer 2013. Thanks for leading the way.

      Hola Alex,

Thanks for your kind comments. I considered using google’s free blogspot as a platform but felt wordpress gave me more freedom and also a unique URL. I do have google adsense ads in the blog but that only earns about $100/yr, about enough to pay for my hosting service. I haven’t checked for awhile but I think I have around a 100 subscribers.

Safe travels and thanks for reading!

      Cheers!
