Mi Dentista, The Queen of Crowns!

Hola loyal reader. Demonstrating uncharacteristic responsibility regarding his medical well being, Bruce does the last leg of his medical journey this year, please join him.  As usual, for those of you who prefer to view these posts from the original blog-site, click here.

I know I am not alone but I really, really hate going to the dentist. However, after my other minor medical challenges this year and really feeling motivated by the event of half of  my troublesome molar falling out, and wondering what life would be like chewing with all my teeth, instead of just the left handed ones for the last 2 1/2 yrs, I gave Ana, my dentista a call. I reached her live, on her cell. Do all medical professionals, down here, pick up their cell calls? It seems so. Ana usually works mornings as she splits time at her one chair facility with her partner Jesus, but with respect for my work schedule she offered to meet me at the clinic at 3:30.

This is my second visit for my crown. Last week Ana prepped my molar and took the impression for the crown I am getting today. On my first visit, midway through, I asked when do I get the root canal? “Why do you need a root canal?” Ana asked. Well I told her that for every other crown (and I have a mouthful) I automatically got a root canal (which is the main reason I hate getting crowns). Ana did some testing and quizzing and determined that I did not need one, and told me that crowned teeth with live nerves last longer. Referencing my previous dentists, Ana jokingly said, “You should sue them!” BTW, Ana does not like working with gloves, she feels she loses some dexterity, and as she reminds me, the risk is all hers.

And a job well done! The total cost for my porcelain crown? 2500P, about  $212US at current exchange rates. Note the paintings on the wall, Ana is an accomplished artista as well.

Ana in front of her clinic. Ana speaks flawless English (I think her vocabulary is larger than mine) having been raised in CA. Her dentistry schooling was at UNAM, DF (Mexico City). Here is her contact info: Ana Morales, Dental Surgeon, Calle 72A, No. 489 x 17 y 19, Col. Garcia Gineres, Merida, 97070. Land line – 999-925-2538, Cel – 999-193-0855, Email – zaramullo@yahoo.com. About escapetomex

My wife Mary and I escaped to Mexico on February 15, 2008 with no plan other than to buy one way tickets to Merida, Mexico and see how long we could stick. We were too young (still too young) to retire and we didn't have any money (still don't) but we'd had it with corporate life and Minnesota winters so we took the fling and with much serendipity it has worked out fine. This blog is the continuing story of our adventure. I hope you enjoy it and please feel to contact me with any questions or insights.

Bruce, great post again. I have to say I believe I hate going to the dentist as much as you do, but those prices sure look nice. On a completely different topic, did they have any 4th of July hoopla for you gringos down there? Just curious. Once again I enjoy the posts!

      Hola Tim,

No, the locals do not recognize the 4th. The Merida English library had a party on Saturday, I believe, and on the beach our Canadian friends reported some parties on the 4th. Canadians had lots of fun this last weekend as they celebrated Canada Day on Friday and our Independence day on Monday.
Thanks for you kind words and I hope you keep reading.

      Cheers!
